Democracy is the only arrangement that treats people as the authors of their own rules.
It is under more strain now than at any point in living memory — just as the technology to make it work properly has arrived.
Our vision is to leverage digital technology and AI to help enhance democracy globally, by increasing people’s access to and participation in governance.
Four things we believe, in order.
Democracy makes governance people-powered.
The people who live with a decision should shape it. That is the difference between being governed and governing — and decisions informed by the people who carry their consequences are better decisions.
Right now, that ideal is in shambles.
Authoritarianism is rising, civil liberties are narrowing, press freedoms are being rolled back. The numbers are not ambiguous.
The historical excuse has expired.
Representative democracy really was hard. Gathering the voice of the people, collating a wide variety of perspectives, identifying what a population had in common — none of it scaled, so policy defaulted to whoever had the power and proximity to move it. That constraint is gone.
Our goal is to be the bridge.
Not a campaigning organisation, not a government. The layer in between — carrying what people think into the rooms where policy is decided, and carrying governance back out in a form people can read, question and act on.
